Scotland Office PPS Role

Angus MP Kirstene Hair has been promoted to the role of parliamentary private secretary (PPS) to the Secretary of State for Scotland David Mundell.

The Scottish Conservative MP moves to the Scotland Office after a spell in the UK Government’s Ministry of Justice under Justice Secretary David Gauke.

The PPS role sits below Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Minister and Secretary of State, and is viewed as a starting point for MPs to go and become ministers.

The main role of the Scottish Secretary is to promote the devolution settlement. Ms Hair replaces Alberto Costa MP, who stepped down from the PPS role last month.

Speaking after the appointment was announced, Ms Hair said:

“I am honoured and delighted to have been appointed as PPS to the Secretary of State for Scotland, David Mundell.

“This is an important time for relations between the UK and Scottish governments.

“There has been a significant transfer of powers from Westminster to Holyrood via the Scotland Act, and more powers will follow after the UK leaves the EU.

“I am very much looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“With other Scottish Conservative MPs in similar positions across different government departments, this clearly demonstrates that the 2017 intake are making their mark at Westminster.”
